NEW POINT BASE SYSTEM (PBS) FOR GENERAL AND CRITICAL SKILLS WORK VISA

On 9 October 2024, the Department of Home Affairs introduced Regulations 18(12) and 18(13), formalising the points-based system (PBS) for General Work Visas and Critical Skills Work Visas.

Under the new system, applicants must earn at least 100 points based on predetermined criteria such as qualifications, salary, post-qualification experience, and language proficiency.

  • If 100 points are achieved through an occupation on the Critical Skills List (and all other requirements are met), the applicant may qualify for a Critical Skills Work Visa.
  • If 100 points are achieved through other point combinations (excluding a critical skills occupation), the applicant may qualify for a General Work Visa.

Applicants must still comply with all other prescribed requirements, including police clearance and medical reports.
